Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are restorative devices that can help replace missing and damaged teeth, enhancing your smile.

What Are Crowns?

Crowns are placed over an existed tooth and then bonded to that tooth. They can help strengthen and conceal any cosmetic issues, including chips, cracks, and discoloration. Crowns are often used to restore teeth that are too weak or damaged for a filling. They are made of a variety of durable materials, including porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, gold, ceramic and resin. Crowns must be strong and durable because they are subjected to very strong forces when you bite.

What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges consist of two crowns that anchor one or more false teeth (also known as pontifs) in your mouth. Bridges are used to replace missing teeth and are usually made of porcelain or are fused to metal.

How Can Crowns and Bridges Help My Smile?

A missing tooth not only affects how your smile looks but can make chewing and speaking difficult. A dental bridge can help you chew your favorite foods again easily and efficiently.

Crowns and bridges can help with a wide array of restorative efforts. They strengthen damaged or weakened teeth, provide stability following procedures, and correct cosmetic issues.

Receiving Crowns and Bridges

Your teeth must be prepared so that they can accommodate a dental crown. We will wear away part of the tooth so that the crown can fit over it. After the tooth is prepared for the procedure, an impression of your mouth is made. A dental laboratory uses the impression to create crowns or bridges that will fit perfectly into your space. You will leave our office with temporary crowns or bridges and will return two or three weeks later when your permanent restoration is ready.

During the second appointment, Dr. Custer will check the fit of your crown or bridge, make any adjustments and permanently attach your restoration with dental cement.

If you would like to learn more about crowns and bridges, or think that you will be a good candidate for this procedure, please give us a call at (419)-445-8176. We will assess if a crown or bridge can benefit you and create a treatment plan to restore your smile in no time.
